Osteoarthritis

The Oxford Dictionary definition:

Arthritis /ɑːˈθrʌɪtɪs/ an inflammation of the joints and

Osteoathritis /ˌɒstɪəʊɑːˈθrʌɪtɪs/ inflammation of the bones of a joint

Whatever the definition osteoarthritis is a painful condition that afflicts animals in much the same way as it does humans. Arthritis can be caused by a wide variety of conditions, including infection, trauma, and general wear and tear. The most common form of arthritis in dogs, is due to age or overuse, injury, developmental conditions or hereditary diseases such as hip dysplasia.

While all dogs regardless of age or breed can be affected by arthritis, certain factors increase a dog’s risk. Large breeds, such as Labrador’s, Golden Retrievers, and German Shepherds, are more prone to arthritis. Obesity can place undue strain on joints resulting in arthritis. And, as with humans, they are more likely to encounter arthritis as they get older due to the everyday wear and tear on their joints.
